More than 100 locals gathered at a community rally on Saturday 28 March, calling on all major parties to commit to upgrading Taylors Road ahead of the state election in November.
The ‘Fix Taylors Road’ campaign, launched by Brimbank council, calls for congestion and safety hazards to be addressed by declaring the route a state arterial road, duplicating it, and delivering the upgrade without delay.
As part of the campaign, council has also invited locals to share their negative experiences commuting on Taylors Road online.
On the petition website, a Deanside resident explained their frustrations with the congestion that builds on the road when commuting home from the airport where they work.
“[At] 4am in the morning I wake up, head to work on Taylors Road. I get from Deanside to the airport in 25 minutes, which is great, however on the way back at 4:.0pm I travel a whopping one hour, 10 minutes due to the congestion on Taylor’s Road,” the resident wrote.
A Fraser Rise resident said they find it “absurd”, having to sit in bumper-to-bumper traffic on the road as early as 6.15am.
“There are road works happening everywhere else, yet never here –the area that arguably needs it most. Outside of off-peak times, I basically consider Taylor’s Road untouchable; it’s that bad,” they wrote.
Another resident from Fraser Rise described Taylors Road as a “nightmare all day long”.
“It needs to be at least double lanes on each side and, most of all BICYCLE LANES ON EACH SIDE! With the new estates opening up west of Deanside it’s just going to be hell,” the resident wrote.
Brimbank mayor Virginia Tachos said the community had reached breaking point.
“Every day, thousands of people in Melbourne’s west sit in traffic on Taylors Road – late for work, late for school, with their safety increasingly put at risk,” Cr Tachos said.
“Taylors Road was built for about 1200 vehicles an hour. Today, it’s carrying in excess of 2000.
“This is not a local road anymore – this is a key arterial linking the Calder and Western Freeways.”
