Every day, thousands living in the west face heavy congestion, long delays and increasing safety risks on Taylors Road. While parts of Taylors Road have been upgraded to accommodate increased traffic, these works only highlight the urgent need to duplicate the stretch between Kings Road in Delahey and Gilson College.
Within Brimbank, Taylors Road runs through Keilor Downs, St Albans, Delahey and Kings Park, connecting growing communities and key transport routes. Along with Green Gully Road, it provides a vital link between the Calder Freeway and the Western Freeway. It is now one of the west's most travelled routes for commuters, families, trucks and local traffic.
Taylors Road has outgrown its original design. Built to carry 700–1200 vehicles per hour in peak periods, it now carries 1850–2100 vehicles per hour - exceeding the capacity of an Urban Arterial Road (up to 1800 vehicles per hour). Rapid residential growth in neighbouring suburbs is placing significant and unsustainable pressure on this critical corridor.
As a result, commuters face significant delays and growing safety risks. It takes 16 minutes to travel eastbound along the almost 1.6 km unduplicated section of Taylors Road during the morning peak and 10 minutes westbound in the afternoon. Duplication would cut both journeys to around 5 minutes, saving commuters up to 11 minutes in the morning and 5 minutes in the afternoon.
Congestion now occurs throughout the day and safety risks are increasing. Between 2019 and 2024, there were 25 crashes along the 1.6 km unduplicated section - more than three times the 8 crashes recorded along the same length of the duplicated Hume Drive nearby.
For thousands of local residents, whether they’re commuting to work, taking kids to school or weekend sport or visiting family and friends, congestion on Taylors Road has become a daily frustration — costing them time, adding stress and increasing the risks on a road never designed for this level of traffic.
Brimbank Council is calling on everyone who uses Taylors Road to get involved.
