Rush hour commute times on the 1.4km stretch between Kings Road and Gilson College has been stalling school runs, delaying your drive to work and disrupting businesses for years. But your time’s not the only thing at risk – Taylors Road has a higher rate of accidents than similar duplicated roads.

Why we need to fix Taylors Road

Taylors Road is causing congestion, long delays, rat-running through local streets and more crashes. Duplication would significantly ease these issues.

Improve safety

The number of casualty crashes can be reduced by about 70%. From 2019 to 2024, there were 25 crashes on the 1.4km stretch of unduplicated road. During this same time period, there were only 8 crashes along the same length of road on the nearby Hume Drive, which is duplicated.​

Reduce traffic congestion

Time: During the morning peak, it takes 16 minutes to travel eastbound along the unduplicated section of Taylors Road and 10 minutes to travel westbound in the afternoon. Duplication will cut both of these travel times down to just 5 minutes​, saving commuters 11 minutes in the morning and 5 minutes in the afternoon.

Capacity: Taylors Road was initially designed as a collector road to carry between 700-1200 vehicles per hour (vph) during the peak times. It is currently operating at 1850–2100 vph, which is even greater than the capacity of an Urban Arterial Road (1800 vph).

Work arounds: Duplication would support up to 3800 vph in both directions and reduce rat-running within the surrounding local roads, thereby keeping motorists on Taylors Road.

Provide economic benefit to the local community

Cost savings: Based on a recent Traffic Assessment Report undertaken by TrafficWorks, it is estimated that the economic benefit of duplicating Taylors Road could be as high as $3.7m per year, equating to $111m over a 30-year period. This economic benefit is centred on cost savings due to a reduction in both time travel and in responding to crashes and injuries.

What we’re asking the State Government to do

1. Declare

The ownership of Taylors Road’s various sections is split between the State Government, Brimbank City Council and Melton City Council.

This section of Taylors Road is currently owned by Brimbank City Council. However, with its volume of traffic and significant road connections, it should be declared by the State Government as a major arterial road.

This declaration would see the ownership of this section of Taylors Road transfer to the State Government and allow for duplication.

2. Duplicate

Road duplication is the process of upgrading a single lane road into a dual lane by building a second, parallel road, usually separated by a median strip or barrier.

Duplication will turn this 1.4km stretch of Taylors Road into a four-lane primary arterial road.

We are asking political parties to commit to the duplication of Taylors Road ahead of the State election in November.

3. Deliver

We don’t just want a commitment, we want action. That means dual lanes, in both directions up to Gilsons College, owned and managed by the State Government.

I live right next to and work on Taylor’s Road. The commute that should take less than 10 minutes has become highly disruptive, sometimes getting so poor that going all the way around on Hume Drive or through the backstreets of Delahey or Kings Park has been a better option. Even getting home from the station at 5pm after the school rush is complete standstill.

Hopefully along with its duplication the roads connecting to it are also assisted. And hopefully Melton can follow suit past Gilson.

Lived here for about 15 years now but these past few of years have really opened my eyes to how much the area is growing and how much this road is such a massive bottleneck for the community.

Need to use Taylors Rd to drive my son to Copperfield College. The school is only a few minutes away but the depression sets in everyday once we hit the roundabout at Gilson College. Dozens of drivers everyday illegally turning right from the left-hand lane at this roundabout, exiting from Tenterfield Dr, so they can turn into Gilson College. I can see it is a massive hassle to do the legal turn from the correct lane and then hope someone lets you into the left lane to enter Gilson College, as it is bumper to bumper here.

Even on weekends the road is a hassle to drive. At around 11am, it is again backed up at Gilson College. That’s 1.7km of single lane, bumper to bumper traffic to hit Kings Rd on a bloody weekend. How fun. We have to dip through Kurung Dr to Gillespie Rd instead.

We have also had a crash at the Braeswood Rd lights in 2025. Coming back home during peak hours. So this road will stay tainted with us forever.
